Family Photo Ideas at The Claremont Colleges

Sibling and Family Photo Ideas in Claremont, CA

Ready for some family photo ideas?

Back in October, my dear friend and I were brainstorming some family photo ideas for her Christmas cards. Though we have many beautiful nature areas near our homes, she was hoping for a more urban feel.  Luckily, we live near The Claremont Colleges which are filled with amazing architectural details. I've wandered all throughout the colleges before with my own family and there are just so many picturesque corners everywhere you turn. So, after she picked out an awesome wardrobe for her entire family, we picked a day and decided to wander around Scripps College in Claremont.

Tips for Getting Successful Family Photos.

1) Look for the light. This can be backlit sun or reflected light off buildings or a myriad other other light sources. The goal is to follow the pretty light.

2) When in urban areas, find interesting architectural details. Stained glass windows in libraries. Gorgeous tile stairs in hidden corners. Or, in our case, Scripps College has the most interesting walled garden with "graffiti" from each graduating class. Extra points for cool light through windows!

3) You can often still find nature in the midst of buildings. Ivy walls are great (just watch for icky spiders). Rose gardens are always gorgeous. And fountains can be a nice place to recharge and capture some candid photos.

4) Now, change your plans when the kids could care less about "looking at the camera and smiling." Decide to make them laugh instead. Maybe have them throw leaves at you. Or have have the kids try to pull their parents' arms off. We gotta make these photography experiences fun after all.

By the way, do you recognize their daughter? She had her premier on my blog about x years ago! Check out that session here! Ahh, now she's all grown up and wrestling with her brothers (and sometimes ignoring them).

How to make a more compelling image

How to make a more compelling image

There's a saying among photographers that "moment is everything." This means that good lighting or composition doesn't mean as much as capturing the moment that should be captured. David duChemin countered that argument in his podcast by reminding everyone that the composition of that "moment" can make or break the image.

I recently took two photos of my four year old on his scooter. In my eyes, one image is more compelling and powerful than the other. Let's see why.

How to capture your child lost in imagination

We all know that children love boxes... sometimes even more than the item that came in them. I recently collected a bunch of boxes for my kids and set them loose with paint markers, masking tape and whatever else they could find in the yard. I was expecting to see three little "robots" walking around or maybe a bunch of new "airplanes."

However, as always, these kids surprised me.

The sunset before a storm

We were rumored to get the storm of the year tomorrow. So, before we hunkered down inside with youtube, I thought it might be a good idea to run as much energy off outside as possible. I also happen to be testing my newest lens, an 85mm 1.8. Oh, what a dreamy lens!

I have taken hundreds of shots of the kids from the front yard. Why have I never thought of standing in this spot before? Behind the bush (for some foreground interest) with the sun behind my daughter is a winner.

An adorable family session at the Horsethief Canyon Park in San Dimas

I've shared a few of these images elsewhere, but I wanted to share all of my favorites. I got to meet the lovely Candice a few months ago when I asked on a local photographer's facebook group if anyone wanted to swap family sessions. Candice quickly volunteered and we got to planning. She took some beautiful photos of my family and I was excited (and nervous) to swap places. Well, her family is just so gorgeous and sweet that every frame was a keeper. So, here's my massive share. I hope you enjoy your photos Candice! I'll be your photographer anytime!

Project 52 - FORTY NINE - Chilly Mornings

See the white stuff on the grass? I convinced my girl one a recent morning that it had snowed outside. Well, it was cold enough to snow and the dew had frozen. :) My apologies to those in the rest of the country that have actual snow to contend with.
